I strongly support the application for Smart Scale funding for a roundabout at the intersection of Old Trail Drive and US 250 in the White Hall District. As an Old Trail resident, I have personally witnessed a significant increase in traffic congestion at this interchange over the past decade as the population of Old Trail and adjacent neighborhoods that feed into Old Trail Drive has increased. Long lines of cars routinely form at this intersection during the mornings and afternoons during school days, wasting time and increasing fossil fuel emissions. In addition, the current intersection is difficult for pedestrians to cross, including students from Western Albemarle HS going to and from Old Trail. A roundabout would significantly improve both safety and traffic congestion at this intersection. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, roundabouts provide a 90% reduction in fatal crashes, 76% reduction in injury crashes, and 30-40% reduction in pedestrian collisions.
