We live near Preddy Creek Park (571 acres with 16 miles of trails). There are signs posted there that say “PETS MUST BE ON A LEASH AND UNDER CONTROL”. When we go to that park, we almost always see someone walking their dog(s) with no leash. So if otherwise law abiding citizens will not obey that pet control ordinance, why do you think criminals will obey your gun control ordinance? And if you cannot, or will not, enforce that pet control ordinance then why should we trust you to protect us from criminals who will not obey your gun control ordinance? This gun control ordinance will not protect anyone and should not be passed. At the very least, there should be an exemption for CHP holders to carry lawfully in the parks and other outdoor areas. You cannot possibly cover the entire perimeter of each park with police and metal detectors. So if you disarm us, what is your plan to protect us?

I urge supervisors to adopt the revised ordinance to prohibit firearms from county buildings and parks. Similar ordinances have been passed in 12 other Virginia localities, including Charlottesville, since a change in state law last year, protecting over 2.5 million residents. This commonsense measure will keep weapons out of places they don't belong: where government officials conduct county business, where voters exercise their citizenship, where residents do business, where county employees work, where families congregate and where police are entrusted to keep the peace. Our communities and neighbors will be safer for it.
