To follow up on last week, I wanted to comment that data on accidents / misuse of firearms by legal gun owners shows these to be incredibly rare. Among 340 million Americans are over 100 million gun owners who possess upwards of 500 million guns. Yet gun accidents number less than 300 per year and homicides by persons who legally own a gun (i.e. not criminals / insane) are very uncommon. When you examine the county, you find both accidents and homicides to be even more statistically unlikely. I say this because, as constitutional officials, you have the grave duty to be aware of facts and base legislation upon data. You are not a homeowners association charged with making life complex for a swath of citizens, based upon the fears or preferences of the few. What may seem reasonable to legislate initially is unreasonable imposition if local statistics do not indicate we have a problem that needs redress. This applies even more so to rights set aside to the people by our Constitution.
