Twelve communities across Virginia, from Blacksburg to Winchester, covering over 2.5 million Virginians, have taken advantage of a state law enacted last year allowing localities to regulate firearms in public. Albemarle supervisors should take up an ordinance prohibiting guns in county buildings, public parks, rec centers and at public demonstrations, a policy the county has sought in the past. State law affirms that guns simply do not belong in our democracy, where children and families gather, or where law enforcement is entrusted to keep the peace. Our gun laws are not as strong as most people think, or probably hope, they are. For example, people in most of Virginia are allowed to openly carry firearms without any training or a background check. Residents shouldn't have to wait for tragedy to occur before lawmakers take action to prevent senseless gun violence.
