It is way past time to take down the soldier statue and cannon in Courthouse Square. They have one real meaning only: that equal justice under the law should not and does not exist for Black people in Albemarle County. As an ordained person of faith, I believe that they are idols. As the great-granddaughter of a Virginia traitor who took up arms against the United States during the War of Rebellion (1861-1865), I believe these and similar relics do not promote heritage, but instead slavery, inequality and hate.
